De golfsport wordt steeds duurzamer.

Golf Environment Organisation is erkend door ISEAL, het kwaliteitskeurmerk voor instanties die duurzaamheidscertificeringen verstrekken. Wereldwijd zijn slechts 21 instanties hierbij aangesloten. Het VVG programma Golf&Milieu maakt, als lokaal programma, deel uit van GEO.

In Vlaanderen zijn er 2 golfbanen voorzien van een GEO-certificaat. Daarnaast zijn er nog eens diverse banen actief met het VVG-programma Golf&Milieu.

De golfsport is de eerste sport met een dergelijk erkenning en onderscheidt zich daarmee.

Bovendien krijgt d? Sport van het jaar er een golfzone bij! Op 19/7 werd, op voorstel van minister Philippe Muyters (minister van Ruimtelijke Ordening ?n minister van Sport) en na advies van de Raad van State, door de Vlaamse Regering beslist over te gaan tot definitieve vaststelling van het gewestelijk ruimtelijk uitvoeringsplan 'Golfterrein Sint-Gillis-Waas'. Na deze beslissing kan de initiatiefnemer overgaan tot aanvraag van bouwvergunning en de daarbij horende procedures. Een belangrijke stap voor dit project.
